| Exhibit in the Catherine C. Johnson Gallery: Thoroughly Modern Berta: The Weavings of Berta Frey, 1898-1972
|
This exhibit showcases textiles from the studio of American handweaver Berta Frey. Modernism and its imperative to produce something new and different can be at odds with a timeless craft such as handweaving. Miss Frey recognized this challenge and met it head on. See the result of this moment in handweaving history, as revealed by Beta Frey’s innovative textiles. Samples and finished pieces are on display. Many are twills with extremely long treadling sequences which give an abstract, irregular look to the fabric. Texture is emphasized by the imaginative use of modern yarns such as lurex, fiberglass and plastic raffia. Traditional patterns are used to great effect in non-traditional formats. See Berta Frey’s innovations and be inspired.
Thoroughly Modern Berta will be on view in the Catherine C. Johnson gallery of The Handweaving Museum and Arts Center until March 31, 2008.
Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 9:00am – 4:00pm.
